Show the Love: Library Legislative Day on February 14
Don’t miss the annual Library Legislative Day, cosponsored by WLA and the Wisconsin Educational Media & Technology Association (WEMTA). Show your love for libraries by attending the grassroots lobby day on February 14, 2012 at the Best Western Inn on the Park in Madison.

But we all know that libraries can’t live on love alone, and this day is also about articulating the real needs libraries face in order to serve their constituencies. Issues in focus will be the SB 375/AB 473 to extend the deadline on WiscNet changes, public library district legislation and more.

Register now to allow the committee time to make your appointments in advance. Bring staff, friends and trustees! - from WLA E-News, 24 January 2012

PUBLIC LIBRARY ANNUAL REPORT ONLINE FORM IS OPEN
The LibPAS online reporting system for the 2011 Public Library Annual Report opened for access on January 18. Email announcements with login information were sent to directors of all public libraries throughout Wisconsin. Instructions and information about the 2011 Public Library Annual Report (along with a link to the reporting site) are available here: http://dpi.wi.gov/pld/annrpt.html

If you are a public library director and did not receive your email announcement, please check the following:

-- if you have spam filtering, see if the message was trapped and add "wi@countingopinions.com" to the allowed addresses.

--if the director's position recently changed or is vacant, please send a message to libraryreport@dpi.wi.gov with the name and email address of the person who will be completing the annual report.

This year, in an effort to reduce errors and further streamline the process for libraries, 10 systems have supplied the Department of Public Instruction with data that has been uploaded and pre-filled on behalf of their member libraries.  That data may include collection and usage numbers derived from regional shared catalogs and circulation systems, or financial information for grants or reimbursements distributed by the regional system. The following systems participated in the pre-load program: Indianhead, Lakeshores, Mid-Wisconsin, OWLS, Nicolet, Northern Waters, South Central, Southwest, Waukesha County, and Winnefox. Winding Rivers is compiling data for upload next week. - Channel Weekly, Vol. 14, No. 16 -- January 19, 2012

RA Crossroads: What To Watch (and Read) After Downton Abbey
By Neal Wyatt
RA Crossroads

Detailed and luxurious settings paired with rich characterizations and witty dialog make this delicious soap opera a delight. Writer Julian Fellowes's creation, starring Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, and Dan Stevens, is set in the late Edwardian era and follows the fate of an ensemble cast of characters residing both upstairs (the Earl of Grantham and his family) and downstairs (his staff) in the grand home of Downton Abbey. Involving, charming, and highly addictive, the first season was event television for its many fans. The second season is in full, if too short, swing on PBS and is bound to leave viewers wanting a range of consolations to carry them through the winter. Read More... - LJ Reviews, January 19, 2012

Soaring with the Red Tails
Joy Fleishhacker
landmarks cover

Premiering in theaters on January 20, 2012, this World War II action/drama film was inspired by the true tale of the Tuskegee Airmen, members of the first all African-American aerial fighting squad who exhibited boundless heroism in many battle zones—in combat in the skies above Europe, in a military where opportunity was limited by segregation and racial prejudice, and on a home front governed by Jim Crow laws and marred by bigotry and discrimination. Red Tails (PG-13), from Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox, is directed by Anthony Hemingway with George Lucas serving as executive producer, a real boon for a movie featuring an array of airborne action scenes. Movie fans will be interested in learning more about this important moment in history and the timing is perfect for displays and booktalks geared toward Black History Month..Read More››› - SLJ Teen, January 28, 2012

19 websites with free fonts
Julie Greller writes: “Free is always good. And when it comes to fonts, there are so many out there, why pay for them? This list should keep graphic design teachers and other creative sorts busy. One thing to remember: The downloads are in a zip file, so your school might block this action.”...A Media Specialist’s Guide to the Internet, Jan. 17

Art for the Sky - http://www.artforthesky.com/default.htm
This is a website about the fabulous projects that conceptual artist Daniel Dancer has been producing with the help of field artist Stan Herd, schoolchildren, and the public since the 1980s.  His works are described as "[a]dventures in Team-Building and Perception to Deepen Our Relationship to Sky, Earth & One Another."  Visitors must check out the "Sky Gallery" on this website to see many animal and environmentally themed works of sky art. There are so many images that impress in the Sky Gallery, but in the "Schools" section there is a standout, the "Sea - Turtle - Sky", depicting an endangered loggerhead sea turtle, made up of students and teachers in Tallahassee, Florida.  Visitors will also thoroughly enjoy the "Videos" section of the Sky Gallery, which contains dozens of short videos of many of the projects and their creation. The Scientist - Multimedia - http://the-scientist.com/category/multimedia/
The Scientist magazine is written for life science professionals, but promises it to be "concise, accurate, accessible, and entertaining."  The magazine's online version has a great Multimedia section on its website that has "Videos", "Slideshows" and "Infographics".  Visitors shouldn't miss the story titled "Bat Hunt" from the January 2012 issue, which profiles a mammologist working in the South Sudan.  The photographs in included this story are excellent, and visitors will be amazed by the photo of the wide-eyed fruit bat cradling its baby. Back on the homepage, the Infographics section contains stories accompanied by colorful, easy-to-follow diagrams, and it is also well worth a look. [KMG] - The Scout Report -- January 20, 2012
